Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) extract heat from the ground through a network of buried pipes, and use it to provide heating and hot water throughout the year.
Because ground temperatures stay steady — around 6–12°C even in winter — they outperform air source systems in the coldest weather, and they are highly efficient: for every kilowatt of electricity used, a well-designed GSHP can deliver up to four kilowatts of heat. The systems are also long-lived, typically lasting around 20 years, and quiet enough indoors to sit comfortably alongside a kitchen.
They pair especially well with underfloor heating, and can provide cooling in summer as well as heating in winter. Like air source, they are eligible for up to £9,000 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
Ground source does need space for the ground loop or a borehole, so the first step is always a survey. Get in touch to find out whether your property is a good fit.
