When the owners of a converted old school house came to us, they had a heating challenge on their hands. The building's size and layout meant it needed more heat output than a single air source heat pump could comfortably deliver — and, like many older rural properties, it was limited to a single-phase electrical supply.
Rather than force an oversized system onto the property, our engineers designed a hybrid solution. A full room-by-room heat loss survey told us exactly how much heat each space needed, and from there we specified a heat pump paired with a supplementary heat source to cover peak demand on the coldest days — all within the constraints of the existing electrical service.
The result is a system that keeps a large, characterful home warm and efficient, without the cost and disruption of upgrading the incoming power supply. It's a good example of why we never quote from a rule of thumb: every home is different, and the survey is what makes the design work.
